Handicapping the Great 21st Century Novels v0.5.0 – an interactive experience
I have made some updates to the interface and the data set.
One major change is that the list is limited to two books by the same author. Now all those pesky NYT bestseller writers won’t clog up the list so much. (This will be a configurable feature in the future.)
Authors can now be scored on origin (US or non-US) and historical generation. See the “Author” category for the new options. Want your list to only include Baby Boomers (1946-1960)? Looking for books by young, non-US authors? Dial away.
Also, authors are categoried by year of first publication: those published before 1991, from 1991 to 2000, and since 2001. This allow you to select “new” authors”, or select “established” authors, and so on.

The data contains 193 novels, with 80+ additional titles in the pool. All novels were published in 2001 or later.
You can help! Wikipedia is lacking biographical details for these authors:
M. M. Buckner
Minister Faust
Kay Kenyon
Karin Lowachee
Lyda Morehouse
Chris Moriarty
Karen Traviss
Ray Vukcevich
Ken Wharton
Liz Williams
Ann Tonsor Zeddies
I am interested in year of birth and year of first publication. Leave a comment and/or contribute to Wikipedia if you would like to help with this project.
Book suggestions are also welcome.

Now that 2007 is well under way I thought it was time to look back at this new century and its literature. What are the great novels of the 2000’s?
Handicapping the Great 21st Century Novels – an interactive experience (special pre-Alpha preview)
Continued…

This is the same gizmo I’ve been working on for the 20th century novels project. I haven’t made many improvements to the interface since the last time I wrote about it. In fact, at this point I would say that the interface is almost-but-not-quite useless. There’s nothing intuitive about it, there is no way to see which flags are associated with a book, the whole thing is too small.
Notes about the book selection
The list is a compilation of several award lists, bestseller lists, and anything I consider notable. Awards are useful because they are progressive — they are likely to continue in the coming years. Same with the New York Times Bestseller list. I found a list from Peter Ackroyd (1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die) which includes lots of books from the 21st century, but this list will eventually become out-of-date.
As a result, the list includes Booker prize winners next to The Da Vinci Code, and this is as it should be. After all, what is it that makes an ordinary novel into a Great Novel of the Century? I think selling millions of copies is probably a good indication.
And about that Booker prize… after looking at the selections of these various annual prizes, I find the book selection for most of these laurels to be disappointing. Maybe this is because the quality of writing has simply gone down in general, but if so that doesn’t mean you should dilute your standards, because if you do the prize becomes nothing more than a gimmick to sell books.
Another horror of the publishing industry I have discovered is that ghost writers are now starting to dominate the bestseller market. This is a new kind of ghost writing where the writer actually gets their name on the cover alongside the more marketable author’s name. Someone like Andrew Gross can become a writing celebrity even before they have published an original book.
Project status
There are 161 books in the xml datafile, and another 120 books that still need to be filed. That means there are a lot of holes in the data currently available.
Some day I will build a control so that only the highest rated novel by a given author will appear on the list. These days there are so many popular writers who publish every year or even several times a year, taking up a lot of space in the list. Unfortunately there is rarely anything distinguishing about these books; one Alex Cross thriller is pretty much like any other.

Okay, trying to wrap this thing up. This is the point at which the Flash IDE becomes useful for building the interface structure. If you’ve got your code properly encapsulated, then constructing an interface around it won’t cause too many problems. Most “Flash game designers” start with a timeline animation, however, and then never get around to creating the critical interactivity that makes the game fun.
I’ve got a splash screen, with a generic button in the lower left corner. Click the button to start the game. Find the three buildings which change locations as you move around.

[Project in progress]
I spent about half a day on server-side stuff, creating a php script that will accept high score data (as CGI params) and put it into a MySQL database. The script does some rudimentary checksums to prevent spoofing.
The second half of the day was spent on “alien display” and “alien move logic”. The aliens (disguised as buildings) only move when you are on a different block, and there can only be one alien per block. Once you find an alien (by clicking on it) the building will turn bright green. One alien will move every time you change blocks. The result is a little too erratic, esp. if you have already spotted two aliens and are looking for the third, as the alien will always seek to avoid the player. It is about as fun as trying to guess a random number, over and over again.
In the current version the city is a 3×3 grid and there are 3 aliens to find. A nine block city is about the largest I can make with 51 building assets. The file is 238 kb, which is getting heavy for a stupid flash game.

I did a little work on the game on the 17th, and a little more today, so I’ll call this day 4. 90% of the fundamental code is done, and about 25% of the interface code. In this version there is a small 3 wide, 2 high city that is navigable with the arrow buttons, the arrow keys, and the a/w/s/d keys.
I have doodled some ideas for city layouts for the different skill levels. The easy city will have 6 rooms and 2 aliens, the medium city will be 12 rooms and 3 aliens, the difficult city will have 18 rooms and 4 aliens. I will need more building assets to be able to furnish the 18 room city.

Untitled flash game project day 3.

Worked on the game a little bit yesterday and a little bit today, so we’ll consider that a third full day.
I spent some time trying to insert a preloader into the game, as the file size is now around 215kb. Unfortunately all of my graphics are library symbols that get loaded in frame 1, and the workarounds for fixing that in Flash MX (not 2004) just aren’t worth it. The best I can do is create a second preloader movie that will load the game file as an external swf — which makes it difficult to put this game up on some of the Flash sites, such as DeviantArt.com, because they want exactly one file, not two (or more).

There is a timer, and some mechanisms to add penalty time to the timer.
There is also a debugging monitor that has not been disabled in the current version. I use the “trace” function a lot, but these days I wrap all traces in a debug handler. This way I can output the debug messages to both the output window (for authoring) and to an on-screen monitor (for live testing).
Here is my task list for completing the game:
1 score (timer) display
1 timer operation
2 city structure
2 make exits
2 navigation gfx
2 game over screen
3 preloader
3 splash screen
3 difficulty select screen
4 high score display
4 high score submit – client
4 high score database
4 high score submit – server
4 high score retrieve – client
4 high score retrieve – server
5 multiple difficulties
5 high score per difficulty
* status box
The number is the priority I have given to each task.

A minor update for the day. The interface is here.
There are 37 building graphics, and the file is now 174kb. I will have to add a preloader at some point.
Today I converted a few more graphics, and made some adjustments in scale and positioning. Then I started to put together the Block object, which is used to store and display a set of buildings for each room in the game. Some temporary interface elements to test the functionality, and so I can post this second version of the prototype.

I have started working on a new "stupid flash game". This is today's progress report.

I have started working on a new “stupid flash game”. You can view the most recent version of the interface at http://www.antimodal.com/hideseek/.
The inspiration for this game came from a dream I had a few months ago. Aliens have landed on Earth, and are able to disguise themselves as buildings. Your job is to find the camouflaged aliens in a metropolitan sized game of hide-and-seek.
The screen is a section, or block, of a city. Each block has a number of buildings. The layout of each block is dynamically generated for each game.
The player can move north, south, east, or west to another section of the city, depending on the city layout. When the player moves, the aliens also may move. The player can identify an alien disguised as a building when one of the buildings on a block appears or disappears on subsequent visits, because otherwise the buildings should always be the same.
The aliens keep the same disguise as they move around the city. Just because a building is incongruous does not mean it is an alien, since the city blocks are random.
The game is scored by time elapsed. When the player guesses incorrectly, time is added to the score. I don’t want it to be “three tries and you are out”, nor do I want there to be a fixed time limit for the game.

Today I put together a simple prototype for creating the city blocks. First I wanted to collect some photographs of buildings to use as game assets. There is a good library of images at WetCanvas!, a website for artists. I found some barns, some churches, some castles, and so on.
I took some of the images into Photoshop to crop and mask them, then saved them as PNG files. Then I imported the PNGs into Flash and played with Trace Bitmap until I got a satisfactory vector drawing. I have to balance image quality with file size. I would like to have a city size of sixteen rooms, and with six unique buildings per room I will need at least 96 vector images. At a very small 5k per image, the game will be 500kb in size.
If you click on the first link above you can see my current progress. I’ve written some simple code to generate the city block when you press a button. Also, the buildings will hilite when you roll over them with the mouse.
I have tried to balance the layout so that at least some portion of each building is visible. It may only be a small corner, which is fine for the game; if the aliens are sometimes obscured, that means you will have to search for them even harder.
